Ranger, the Border captain, struck ten fours in his unbeaten 72 while Mbane took an aggressive approach with his 60 taking 85 balls. Saidi Mhlongo took three wickets and legspinner Tyron Pillay produced tidy figures of 2 for 64. Border’s fine fightback was to continue as they claimed two early KZN wickets, leaving the match finely balanced heading into the second day.
